Welcome to Black Girls Bookshelf!!

Hey Booklovers!

We're a small team of volunteers who love reading, discussing and sharing stories by Black writers and writers of colour. We also love to promote the work of up-and-coming writers too! Oh and sometimes we have book giveaways!

And if you're here you love reading and recommending books too!

" 'Diversity’ should just be called ‘reality.’ Your books, your TV shows, your movies, your articles, your curricula, need to reflect reality.” — Tananarive Due

Diversifying our bookshelves?

We all know that representation matters as it truly reflects and is representative of modern-day life however, for too long we've addressed and challenged the lack of diversity in the publishing industry. We've questioned why the curriculum has such a lack of representation with outdated books that can actually perpetuate racism and stereotypes, and are not reflective of our rich cultural society today.

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid - Review coming soon!

We're thrilled things are starting to change and authors of colour have been given a platform to share their voices and writing the most amazing novels, poetry, non-fiction, short stories and plays. Not to mention the publishing houses promoting diversity and ensuring these books and stories reach us!

Why we started the Book Club?

We started Black Girls Bookshelf as we wanted a platform to celebrate and promote diversity in literature and create a safe space to amplify the voices of Black writers. Everything is welcome, from old school classics to up and coming writers and we love a quote from some of our faves!

Reading books isn't just for children or students, it has been linked to wellbeing in a number of studies and has been shown to improve the symptoms of anxiety and depression. So whenever you're feeling a bit low, grab a book and get a read on!

“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” – Maya Angelou
